Why EVs Lose Range in Winter
Electric vehicle batteries are less efficient in the cold, and heating the cabin uses energy that would otherwise go to driving. On cold Toronto days you can see noticeably less range than the number you're used to in summer. Add a charger that's busy or out of service, and it's easy to come up short.
If Your EV Is Running Low
- Slow down. Highway speeds use more energy.
- Reduce heating. Use seat and steering wheel heaters instead of heating the whole cabin.
- Head for a charger early, and have a backup in mind.
- Pull over safely before the battery reaches zero, so you're not stopped in a live lane.
If It Hits Zero
Move to a safe spot if you can, turn on your hazards, and call for help. In most cases you don't need a tow. Our on-the-spot EV charging adds enough charge to get you to the nearest charger or home.
Don't Forget the 12-Volt Battery
EVs still have a small 12-volt battery that powers the computers, locks, and lights. If it dies, the car may not turn on even with a full main battery. We can boost it just like a gas car.
