The Essentials
- Warm blanket, hat, and gloves. If your engine won't run, you'll lose heat quickly.
- Phone charger or power bank. Your phone is how you call for help.
- Snow brush, ice scraper, and a small shovel.
- Sand, kitty litter, or traction mats to help if you're stuck on ice.
- Flashlight with spare batteries.
- Reflective triangles or flares.
- Washer fluid rated for winter temperatures.
- Water and non-perishable snacks.
- Basic first aid kit.
Before Winter Hits
- Get your battery tested. Cold is the number one battery killer.
- Switch to winter tires for better traction and braking on snow and ice.
- Keep your gas tank at least half full, or your EV well charged.
- Check that your spare tire is inflated and you know where the jack and locking lug key are.
If You Get Stuck in Snow
Don't spin your wheels. It digs you in deeper and can overheat the transmission. If your vehicle is stuck and running, make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow to avoid carbon monoxide build-up. Then call for a winch out.
